STAGE 3.1: A Decision PointIf the performance problem persists, even after you have dealt with the issues raised in Stages One and Two of the Performance Analysis, you must now judge whether the employee is unwilling to do the job properly, or if they lack the ability even if they tried. Depending on whether the problem is the employee's ability or their willingness to try, there are different ways to resolve the problem.
If the problem is ability, and if you have dealt with the issues raised in Stages One and Two of the analysis, you will need to consider a different job for the employee, or may be forced to dismiss them.
If the problem is that the employee is unwilling to do the job, you may be able to coach the employee so that performance improves.
Do you think the employee could do this task if he/she wanted to?
Yes, you feel they could perform the task successfully. Please move on to stage 3.2
If not, please proceed here.
If you need more information, please read the
Coach's Notes on the right.
Coach's Notes:The only way that you, as a supervisor, can be sure that the employee can do specific tasks, is to observe them doing the tasks. Always discuss your concerns with the employees and let them know in advance that you will be observing their performance.
Once you have a better idea of their work on the job, you can return to Stage 3 of Performance Analysis and decide if the problem is ability or willingness.
